Terra X – The Metal Planet

Part 1: Geologist Colin Devey sets out to search for clues in Jordan. This desert country is home to important raw materials for a climate-friendly future for the world, especially metals. In Jordan, Colin Devey finds the “Big Six,” the most important raw materials of the future. Whether wind turbines or electric cars: the more CO2 is to be saved, the greater the need for metals for green technologies. The processing of metals in the Middle East marked the end of the Stone Age around four millennia ago. At that time, a new chapter began for humanity, one shaped by metals, including copper.

Part 2: For thousands of years, people have been digging holes in the ground and extracting raw materials from mines. South Africa is world-renowned for this. But now there are other sources: our cities. Colin Devey knows that in order to achieve global climate targets, humanity will need more and more metals in the near future. However, this will not be possible without the African continent and its significant untapped raw material deposits. Nowhere are these raw materials mined deeper than in the Johannesburg area, where miners go down almost 4,000 meters in search of gold. This metal is irreplaceable, for example, in protecting satellites from the sun.
